Gator Gram Winner for October is Gracie!

Congratulations to Gracie for winning the drawing for October!  Gracie placed a ticket she earned in a collection jar earlier this  month.  She and other students in the class earn Gator Grams by doing exemplary work or showing great kindness to another.  On the last day of the month, we draw from the jar and the winner may select an iTunes card or a Wal-Mart gift card.  Gracie chose the Wal-Mart gift card!  Way to go, Gracie!  We're very proud of you!

Sixth Grade Students Complete Their "Community" Banner

Our sixth grade grammar class is focused on one of the Catholic Social Teachings.  The Call to Family, Community and Participation states the following: "Recognize and promote the family, a sense of community, and participation in society for the common good and well-being of all."

Students were asked to create a mural that represents the class as a community.  The class just completed a banner that shows our class mascot, "Gale, the Grammar Gator." in his habitat.  He represents the goals students are trying to achieve in class:  excellent academics, a sense of community, and caring for the well-being of all class members.  Congratulations, sixth grade, for a job well done!

How-to Article Due on Tuesday, October 14th

Hello Parents of 6th Grade Grammar Gators!

Your children have been learning how to write a How-to Article in grammar
class. The information we have covered is in their textbook, Voyages in
English, on pages 248-269. Then, pages 274-285 cover the prewriting,
editing, revising, and publishing of the article. I tell you this in case you
should have any questions about what we are doing and what my expectations are.
Your children also have a rubric showing how they will be graded.

We have been using laptops in order to find material for the topics chosen by
your children. The students know that plagiarism is a no-no! So, I am
comfortable in knowing that material won't be taken from the internet and
copied word-for-word.

Examples of completed How-to Articles can be found on pages 248-249 of our
text. Requirements are as follows (please ask your child to see the rubric,
also): The final paper is due on Tuesday, October 14th. It is to be double-
spaced, size 14 font (Arial Black font, please), and paragraphs are to be
indented. If materials or supplies are a part of the article, they are to be
put on a separate sheet (typed).

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me. I am excited to see the
finished products. Have a blessed week! Beth Stafford 527-0868

"Grammar Gators" Challenge

Reflecting on today's activities, I can honestly say that the first day of school was pretty spectacular!  I am excited to have all of you in our class.  I look forward to many interesting and fun-filled days in the world of sixth grade grammar and writing.  To make things a little more fun, I challenge you to "knock my socks off" by doing exemplary work in class.  While doing well academically, you can also be well-rounded by being a genuinely good person through loving and supporting your friends in class.  I am looking for random acts of kindness.  To recognize those who receive the "Gator Gram," work will be displayed in the classroom, and a ticket will go into a drawing on the last day of each month for a $15.00 iTunes gift card.  I hope this incentive gets all of you 'fired up' and ready to do your best!  Good luck!  Mrs. Stafford

Welcome to Sixth Grade Grammar!

Sixth Grade Grammar Syllabus

Hello!  Welcome to sixth grade grammar class!  I am looking forward to working with you this year as we strive to improve your grammar and writing skills.

Our activities will include journaling, taking notes, actively participating in classroom activities, researching, writing, and having fun! J  I believe grammar can be as fun as you make it.  While I realize you are sixth graders, I have found it true that children of all ages (even adults) love incentives.  Our class is nicknamed the “Grammar Gators.”  Students will receive a written acknowledgement on a small paper gator congratulating work well done, and/or being randomly kind to someone.  Incentives will be the recognition, of course, and your choice of a snack (chips or candy) or a homework pass.

Homework—I do not assign weekend homework.  I believe that we all need the weekend to rest, go to church, and be with our families.  So, prepare to work hard during the week!  There will be homework on Monday-Thursday nights.

Homework is not an option!  It is due the day after it is assigned.  A proper heading must be on your paper (to be discussed in class), and it must be written legibly.  If you choose not to do your homework and there isn’t a valid reason, plan to stay after school with me to complete it.  If you are having problems understanding your homework, please call me at home for help at 918-527-0868.  Also, if something keeps you from getting your work done such as a family emergency or you becoming ill, I would appreciate a phone call letting me know.  I will excuse your assignment being late if you communicate with me.  If you come into class without it and haven’t notified me, I will expect for you to stay and finish it after school.

Students receive 5 points per day for participating, behaving, coming to class prepared (book, paper, pencil, planner), and turning in homework.  Points will be lost if these requirements aren’t met.  Your journal will remain in the classroom.  Once or twice a week you will be given a topic to write about, usually after being told a story or prompted by me.  I will read your thoughts and write back to you. Please be honest and open.  I am the only person reading your journal.

Ink is not permitted!  Mechanical or regular pencils must be used.

Grading Point System:

Tests                               100-200 points each

Participation                 25 points each week

Daily Homework          Each answer counts as one point.

Journaling                     10 points each week

Quizzes                           50 points each

I am always available to work with you.  I am available from 8:00-8:10 (because of outside duty) and after school from 3:30-4:00 (or later if needed).  If you need help, please ask.

If you call me at home, please don’t call after 9:00 p.m.  You may call me as early as 6:00 a.m. if you need to.

I’m looking forward to an awesome year!

Mrs. Beth Stafford
