Sixth Grade Grammar Syllabus
Hello! Welcome to
sixth grade grammar class! I am looking
forward to working with you this year as we strive to improve your grammar and
writing skills.
Our activities will include journaling, taking notes, actively participating in classroom activities, researching, writing, and having fun! J I believe grammar can be as fun as you make it. While I realize you are sixth graders, I have found it true that children of all ages (even adults) love incentives. Our class is nicknamed the “Grammar Gators.” Students will receive a written acknowledgement on a small paper gator congratulating work well done, and/or being randomly kind to someone. Incentives will be the recognition, of course, and your choice of a snack (chips or candy) or a homework pass.
Homework—I do not assign weekend
homework. I believe that we all need
the weekend to rest, go to church, and be with our families. So, prepare to work hard during the
week! There will be homework on
Monday-Thursday nights.
Homework
is not an option! It is due
the day after it is assigned. A
proper heading must be on your paper (to be discussed in class), and it must be
written legibly. If you choose not to
do your homework and there isn’t a valid reason, plan to stay after school with
me to complete it. If you are having
problems understanding your homework, please call me at home for help at
918-527-0868. Also, if something keeps
you from getting your work done such as a family emergency or you becoming ill,
I would appreciate a phone call letting me know. I will excuse your assignment being late if you communicate with me. If you come into class without it and
haven’t notified me, I will expect for you to stay and finish it after school.
Students
receive 5 points per day for participating, behaving, coming to class prepared
(book, paper, pencil, planner), and turning in homework. Points will be lost if these requirements
aren’t met. Your journal will remain in
the classroom. Once or twice a week you
will be given a topic to write about, usually after being told a story or
prompted by me. I will read your
thoughts and write back to you. Please be honest and open. I am the only person reading your journal.
Ink is not permitted! Mechanical or regular pencils must be used.
Grading Point System:
Tests 100-200
points each
Participation 25
points each week
Daily Homework Each
answer counts as one point.
Journaling 10
points each week
Quizzes 50
points each
I am always available to work with you. I am available from 8:00-8:10 (because of
outside duty) and after school from 3:30-4:00 (or later if needed). If you need help, please ask.
If you call me at home, please don’t call after
9:00 p.m. You may call me as early as
6:00 a.m. if you need to.
I’m looking forward to an awesome year!
